Process
The Belasco theater projection project involved developing a concept, building a model box, and projection mapping interactive visuals on said model for three scenes of a speculative production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Belasco Theatre in New York City.
The visual inspiration for the concept came from Matthew Barney’s Cremaster Cycle "The Order”, set in the Guggenheim Museum. The architecture of the interior of the Guggenheim was a driving force in terms of the set design and subsequently the projection design.
Model Box Process
The scale model box was made out of foam core and built by creating a 3D model based on an architectural drawing of the Belasco, including the entire stage, proscenium, audience floor, and back and side walls. The model was used to determine shapes and dimensions of each component, which were then hand cut and lasercut from foam core boards.
The 3D model was also used for planning transitions for stage elements between scenes, as well as designing the physical layout of each scene.
Projection Mapping Process
The visuals projected were created using a combination of TouchDesigner and Adobe After Effects. Mapping the visuals to each part of the model box and timing transitions was accomplished with a combination of MadMapper and Isadora.
